Saving lives from space

“From Hurricane Katrina to the Japanese tsunami – satellite images are increasingly playing an important role during rescue efforts after natural or man-made disasters. The images, often taken minutes after devastation has occurred, help pinpoint people and places at risk.A formal system of sharing information by space agencies was agreed in 1999, with the creation of the Disasters Charter. Since then, the charter has helped provide data for more than 300 disasters, in more than 100 countries. Here – to mark World Space Week 2012 – Dr Alice Bunn from the UK Space Agency looks at how the images, taken many hundreds of miles above the planet, are being used to save lives.”

Congo to plant a million hectares of trees by 2020 | News by Country | Reuters   Leave a comment

– The Republic of Congo will plant 1 million hectares of trees by 2020 to restore degraded forest and provide wood for paper and fuel, the president said on Friday.

President Denis Sassou N’Guesso made the announcement on the final day of a weeklong summit in the Congolese capital, aimed at tackling deforestation in the Amazon, Congo and Borneo-Mekong forest basins, the three largest in the world.

The Three Forest Basins Summit, organised by N’Guesso, aims to reduce forest destruction and thereby ease climate change.

“To reduce the pressure placed on our natural forests by logging and exploitation for wood fuel, the government has decided to put in place a plantation programme on an area of one million hectares between now and 2020,” N’Guesso said.
